In it's second season, CHEERS was on the rise after winning several first season Emmy's and a growing audience with summer reruns. Having ending that season with the beginning of the "will they or won't they" sexual banter, this is the only season that Sam and Diane were officially a couple. Many storylines created the tension of their challenges to what everyone thought would never last so the threat of breaking up always seemed to persist. In this classic episode, recurring character Dave (played by Fred Dryer) pops in to whisk Sam away to go scouting for women unaware he is dating Diane. In his frustration, he predicts he can break them up in 24 hours and quickly sets them down that path by simply asking to get one of the numbers from Sam's black book. This sets off a huge argument between Sam and Diane as she is hurt he still has it. The episode has huge laughs and funny dialogue, I still laugh every time he opens up the black book and as a gesture to Diane to show his commitment, offers to throw out "x thru z and all but one or two," only to resort to pulling out scotch tape to put it back together when his gesture fails to appease her.
Written by one of the best all-time situation comedy writers, David Angell, this episode won him an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. He went on to write many more great episodes before moving on to co-create FRASIER and add many more incredible scripts.
The script is a First Draft dated September 7,1983 and is 46 all white pages. As you can see from the photo, it has a bend toward the right, presumably from the way it was stored over time and some discoloration in the upper left. Although the condition may be a factor in a decision to purchase (please email for more specifics if you are concerned about the condition), I have to stress how rare this script is for this show. In over 30 years of collecting, I've only seen it twice and this is one of them.
Starring Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt, and John Ratzenberger.
NOTE: I am still looking for originals of some episodes, please contact me if you have any you’d like to sell.
