In it's second season, CHEERS was on the rise after winning several first season Emmy's and a growing audience with summer reruns.  Having ending that season with the beginning of the "will they or won't they" sexual banter, this is the only season that Sam and Diane were officially a couple.  Many storylines created the tension of their challenges to what everyone thought would never last so the threat of breaking up always seemed to persist.
In this classic episode, the focus is actually on Carla and marks the first appearance of Nick, her ex-husband and father of her children (so far), as well as his new wife Loretta, played by Dan Hedaya and Jean Casem.
